Pittock Mansion |
Portland Monthly has just released its list of the 10 Greatest Homes and among the honorees is the historic
Pittock Mansion. “We were honored and excited to be chosen as one of Portland’s 10 Best Homes… we were impressed with the article,” commented Angela Allee, a representative from Pittock Mansion.
Randy Gragg’s article and its subsequent publicity have helped raise traffic to the mansion’s website. It may even be one of the reasons for the increase in visitors this year. Allee reports that “the publicity we received… last spring and this summer definitely helped increase awareness and encourage visitation.” Pittock Mansion is a common choice for school field trips and the late arriving summer has kept visitors coming well into September.
Built in 1914 for Henry Pittock and his wife Georgiana, the 23-room French Renaissance style home sits on 46 acres, 1000 feet above Portland, OR. Pittock arrived in Oregon at the end of the 19
th century and turned his entry-level job at the
Oregonian into a career, eventually becoming the owner in 1860.
Highlights of a visit to the Mansion are the winding three story staircase, the turrets reminiscent of Eurpoean castles, and the stunning views from the drawing room. Purchased in 1964 for $225,000 by the City of Portland, the Mansion now serves a museum and houses artifacts from turn of the century. The Pittock Mansion Society and Portland Parks and Recreation now oversee the operations of the historic site.
